Charles Villiers Stanford’s Organ Sonata No 2 in G minor “Eroica”, Op. 151. Written in 1917, this piece was a homage to French losses in the First World War. The first and third movements are called “Rheims” and “Verdun” respectively, and the Marseillaise is quoted extensively in the second and third movement. Stanford’s dedication for the piece reads “To Monsieur Charles Marie Widor and the great country to which he belongs”.
