(24 Jan 2014) Direct talks between the Syrian government and the Western-backed opposition were scrapped on Friday, a major setback for the peace conference that aims to halt a civil war that has killed at least 130-thousand people.
Both sides still met separately with United Nations mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, with the opposition Syrian National Coalition arriving for their session hours after the government delegation had sat down with him.
Later on Friday, however, the UN mediator said the government and opposition delegations would meet "in the same room" on Saturday for their first face-to-face meeting in three years of fighting.
