Obviously, the ASAT classic bears more than just a passing resemblance to a Fender Telecaster, but just in case you didn’t already know, there is a good reason for that, as G&L guitars was founded by a certain Leo Fender, the man behind some of of the most iconic guitars ever made, and this, the ASAT classic proved to be his final word on his timeless single cut design.

Depending on which finish you go for, the body is made from either Alder for the block colours, or in the case of the transparent finishes such as this lovely Orange, it’s made from Swamp Ash, to show off that beautiful wood grain, and it’s topped off with a 3 ply scratch plate. Attached to the body is a lacquered, bolt-on hard rock maple neck, and this is fitted with either a maple or caribbean rosewood fingerboard, again, depending on the finish.

The guitar’s got a traditional 25.5” scale length, and we’d say that the neck profile’s not too far off that of a modern Fender, so any Tele fan is instantly gonna feel at home with the Fullerton Deluxe. One welcome addition that you don’t get on many Telecasters though, is the contour on the back of the body, which makes it feel much more comfortable to play when you’re sitting down.

In terms of hardware, there’s a set of high quality, G&L 12 to 1 ration tuners up on the headstock, 22 medium jumbo frets running down the fingerboard and a traditional boxed-steel bridge with 6 individual brass saddles. One of the biggest innovations that Leo Fender brought to G&L guitars was his Magnetic Field Design, or MFD pickups. These use a ceramic bar magnet underneath each coil, with soft iron adjustable pole pieces which transfer the magnetic field up to the top of the pickup. This means that you can adjust the output of each individual string on each pickup, and results in lower noise with greater overall output and a warmer tone. The ASAT classic features 2 single coil MFDs, the bridge pickup delivering a nice crisp attack with lots of Tele bite and complex harmonics, whilst the neck pickup warms things up, offering a rich tonal palette to play with. As you might expect, these then run through a standard 3 way selector switch, volume and tone controls.
