Is it difficult for you to use the information that we teach in a real-life situation? This video resulted because I wanted this giant box out of our filming area… so we decided to make a video once we realized how heavy it was. This subject matters a lot to me because I have watched so many people injure themselves (including me) from lack of conscious movement while moving heavy and awkward objects.⁣

I recently watched 2 movers carry all of the stuff into our house. One of them constantly complained of back pain and also lifted with a rounded back. The other (same age) lifted with a neutral and active spine, thus putting most of the load into his hips rather than his lower back. The second guy had no pain. I used to lift like mover #1 and that resulted in a debilitating L4/L5 herniation of 10mm. I moved like that everywhere. ⁣

Notice that as I carry the box up the stairs, I am slightly rotated while also maintaining an active spine to keep that neutral curve. This position is totally fine and is very similar to doing a turkish getup or a windmill. Working on using the muscles in your lower back to actively maintain a subtle arch in your back is actually more work! It is less lazy and requires more energy, but in the long run, you will feel a lot better. As you get better lifting like this, it will feel like less work and become more natural and require less thought. ⁣

Do you need to pick up light objects like this as well? Probably not, but if you are experiencing pain, then being mindful of your movement patterns will help you gain confidence in yourself and ultimately reduce inflammation and pain.⁣
