"Police have moved an application before the court that these boys should be handcuffed from the Tihar jail up to the court. In reply of that, other advocate of the accused person have said they should not be handcuffed. But I found seriously within my own investigation, within my own fact (finding activities), it revealed to me that now police is going to encounter these innocent boys. These boys will not even be allowed to see trial in these coming days."

STORYLINE
One month after the fatal gang rape of a young woman on a moving New Delhi bus, a promised "fast-track" trial has yet to begin.

On Thursday, another pre-trial hearing ended after a few minor procedural issues were raised.

Defence lawyers for the five accused men said they needed additional copies of some of the evidence.

Authorities are eager to move the case into a fast track court after the especially brutal attack drew nationwide protests and worldwide scrutiny of violence against women in India.

Those courts are designed to avoid the delays, incompetence and corruption that plagues much of India's legal system.

Lawyers for the five have said police mistreated their clients, including beating them to force them to confess to the December 16 crime.

Defence lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma said he was concerned about the safety of the accused.

Meanwhile, VK Anand, defence lawyer for the bus driver Ram Singh, said he was planning to ask the Supreme Court to transfer the case to another state.

"We are sure we will not get justice in Delhi," Anand said.

The next hearing in the case will be held on January 21, the defence lawyers said.
