When the COVID-19 global pandemic caused prison volunteer programs to have to stop meeting in person, the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, developed a set of correspondence arts workshops to enable continued arts collaborations among people from the free world and those who live inside Michigan prisons. PCAP volunteers receive training in arts facilitation and sustained support from our faculty and staff at the university. Each participating prison is given a correspondence workshop in either creative writing, visual art, or theatre. Groups of facilitators are matched with a group of up to twenty incarcerated adults in a particular prison, and the facilitators send written packets with arts activities for the incarcerated participants to complete and return to the PCAP office in the mail. Over the course of a semester, facilitators and participants share their work with one another in the mail, as they work towards a collaborative final project. These final projects are returned to the incarcerated participants in written form as a final packet in the mail, and they are also recorded as videos made by the facilitators to be shared with the general public online. This video represents the culmination of one workshop’s semester of creative exchange in the mail.
