(11 Dec 2013) The Russian ruble was given its official symbol in Moscow on Wednesday after a month-long public vote.
Hand picked by Russians, the new symbol of Russia's national currency was announced by the Central Bank of Russia.
The five proposed rouble symbol options were up on the website for a month urging visitors to vote for their favourite, which would then become the official sign.
The Cyrillic 'P' with horizontal strokes won the race with over 61 percent of voters choosing it. In Russian, it is pronounced as Latin 'R', but experts still fear that might get lost in translation.
"A wide variety of professionals have accepted this as a compromise. There were a lot of ideas, good alternatives, there were a lot of concerns connected to the fact that this is a very Russian decision. And for a Latin person this sign will read as 'puble' and not 'ruble'. And this 'puble' still confuses the professionals in the field," said Ilya Ruderman, a leading graphic designer with the state news agency RIA Novosti.
"How the real design will look is still completely up to the font designers. Whatever a bank decides, while the professional community hasn't made their decision on this, we still cannot tell how the symbol will look in the history," he added.
