Welcome to Day 5 of our Learn English Pronunciation Series!

Today we explore the Long A sound (/eɪ/) – the sound where A says its name.

This video is part of Week 1: Basic Sounds & Pronunciation, where we start with individual vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) and mouth positioning. Perfect for beginners with weak English or no English at all who want to improve spoken English fluently and confidently.

👉 Where do we find the Long A sound?
1️⃣ A + consonant + silent E → cake, name, late, made
2️⃣ AI or AY vowel team → rain, play, day, aim
3️⃣ Open syllables (when a syllable ends with “a”) → april, able, paper, table

🔹 What is a syllable?
✔️ A syllable is one unit of sound in a word.
✔️ Example: cat (1 syllable), a-pril (2 syllables).


🔹 Closed vs Open Syllables:
✔️ Closed syllable → ends with a consonant → short vowel (/æ/) → cap.
✔️ Open syllable → ends with a vowel → vowel usually says its name → a-pril.


🔹 Exceptions:
English has exceptions!
✔️ sofa → last “a” = schwa (/ə/), not long A.
✔️ area → first “a” = long A, last “a” = schwa.


✅ Simple rule to remember:
If the syllable ends with “a” and nothing closes it → it usually makes the long A sound (/eɪ/). But in unstressed syllables, it may become a schwa.
