In October 2020, the replacement span of the Gerald Desmond Bridge opened to the public after initial construction began in 2013. Unlike the old span, this bridge has three lanes in each direction, improved seismic and safety features, and higher elevation to help accommodate larger cargo ships that enter the Port of Long Beach.
