Shipwrecks, Marines and Hocking’s ice cream.

Start at Churchfields car park (£4.40 for 4 hours based on July 2022 prices). Paddle upstream on the incoming tide. Leave about 90 mins before high tide to avoid the numerous sandbanks.

Investigate the wrecks, the Torridge Bridge, down past the ships people appear to live on. Wave to the Marines and head to Instow Beach for a delicious Hocking’s Icecream. Then paddle back to Appledore.

You’ll find various places for refreshments or meals in Appledore.

Safety Advice:
On tidal rivers with moored boats can be dangerous when using a securing leash from you to your craft. Make sure you can easily reach and release it if caught in ropes/chains if separated from your craft. Tidal waters can trap you opposite your craft. I connect my ankle strap to my buoyancy aid chest strap.

Car Park warning…. If launching from Instow, avoid the ANPR controlled car park. This is causing misery, frustration and anger. I got a ticket just going into and turning around and leaving about 18 months ago. They don’t care. Facebook has a page dedicated to getting rid of this company. If over 3,000 people a year are getting caught out, then something is wrong. Apparently, you don’t even need to go in to get a ticket. People parking next to the public toilets to use toilets are getting tickets by these ANPR cameras. You will NOT get a refund for any reason. I’ve told the local MP I won’t visit Instow again. I’ve only been back by kayak to visit the Hocking’s icecream van on the beach.
