Meet Elan the Male Owl: A Tribute to a Life Taken Too Soon
The local male is named "Elan", aka "BrightSpot" after Elan Ganeles, a young man whose life was tragically taken too soon when he was murdered. Elan is a very devoted and good provider. You can identify the male by the spot pattern on the middle tail feather; this owl has a prominent white spot on the left side close to the tip of the feather, and no spot on the right side close to the tip, and two prominent spots in the next row. You may even see that tail pattern when he's sitting at the entrance of the nest box.

There is a second male is "Spotty". He was more active in January - before BrightSpot came on the scene, and doesn't come to the nest box as often as he did in January. Look at the spot pattern on the middle tail feather: one diffuse spot on the right side near the end, and no spot on the left side there, two spots in the second row, the left one being boomerang-shaped, and with a black edge around the outer edge.

Female:
The local female is named "Clover": The elongated spots are on the left side of the central tail feather, and the rounded spots are on the right side.
The second female is "Barred": Three elongated spots on the right side, and more rounded spots on the left side of the central tail feather.

We added this little owl nest box on April 7, 2022 in hope that a pair will occupy it in in 2023. To our surprise we checked the box on June 5 and discovered the box was occupied with 2 days old nestlings and a egg. On June 7 the youngest nestlings died for unknown reasons.
