Tory MP Sir David Amess was fighting for his life today after being stabbed at a constituency meeting.
He is understood to have suffered serious injuries.
Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel were returning to London from a regional Cabinet meeting in Bristol following the attack.
It was not clear whether the incident may be terror related or not.
The 69-year-old Southend West MP was reportedly stabbed several times at a surgery in Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.
In a statement, Essex Police said officers arrived at the scene in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12.05pm and arrested a man.
A knife was also recovered from the area.
