When visiting a Shinto shrine, for the first time or even the eleventh time, a person can feel unconfident and wonder "is this really the right way to pay my respects"? This video, "Hajimete-no-Jinja – Gokito (Prayer Service)" explains the Shinto gokito ceremony and how to request a prayer service at a jinja (shrine).

Safe home, successful business, easy pregnancy, passing a test, or warding off evil... a gokito is a formal prayer service offering personal requests to the kami (deities). The ritual consists of purification, reciting the request, and then offerings of a dance and tamagushi (sakaki plant). Afterwards you will receive an o-fuda (amulet). It is from the kami so do handle it with care. At home, place it on the kamidana or an o-fuda stand and continue to pay your respects.
