Financial leverage can be both good and bad, depending on your goals and your situation. Is it worth the risk?

Leverage is a double edged sword. You amplify returns on the way up. But if you haven’t managed risk correctly, leverage can have savage results on the way down, especially in volatile markets. How do you know if using Margin or Financial Leverage is right for you?

Early on in the economic cycle – during the expansion phase – you are more likely to see high growth and lower levels of interest rates. Both of these are good if you are considering financial leverage. But as we all know, the market can change with very little notice.

If your considering financial leverage, here are a few questions to ask yourself

1.) Are you in a financially stable situation? If you're not, don’t even consider it.

2.) Impact to lifestyle: If incurring losses will impact your lifestyle, you should not use leverage.

3.) What risk management strategies do you have? If you’re not sure or you can’t clearly identify them, you need to do some homework.

4.) Do you or the professional you are working with have experience? If you don’t, start small until you gain more knowledge.

For wealthy individuals, when managed correctly leverage can be a useful and valuable tool in amplifying returns.

Investing well is about taking calculated risks, that are measured and rules based. That is the key to success
