Shadows House and the CloverWorks Curse

At the start of the Spring 2021 anime season, Shadows House was one of the most unique shows to watch. It achieved horror not through typical means but instead by juxtaposing cute slice of life content with strange imagery and normalization of dehumanization. It was so unique that it got me to read the manga, which has become one of my favorites. However just as I caught up to the manga, the anime went off on an anime original path, which from the view of a manga reader completely ruined some big parts of the story, but for anime watchers only felt like a slight downgrade at worst.

In this video essay I try to explain what I felt was wrong with the adaptation, how and why the view of anime original content differs between manga readers and anime-only viewers, why it matters that the adaptation is different from the source material, the reason why anime original content and endings have to occur, and how to possibly prevent that from happening in the future, all while trying to relate back to Shadows House.
