During the Korean War, around 7,200 American soldiers were taken prisoner. Roughly 2,700 died in captivity — a death rate of about 38%, the highest of any U.S. conflict. Most deaths occurred early in the war under North Korean control, before Chinese forces later imposed more structured POW camp systems.

The idea of widespread “brainwashing” emerged after the war, fueled by Cold War fears and popular culture. While some POWs were subjected to indoctrination, coercion, and torture — and a small number made pro-communist statements under duress — only 21 American prisoners refused repatriation after the 1953 armistice.

The reality was not mass mind control, but extreme suffering. Most POWs who survived captivity chose to come home.
