Underwater Archeology | Excavating the Wacissa River

Описание к видео Underwater Archeology | Excavating the Wacissa River

The Means brothers used to swim the Wacissa River, and would often pass a spot where they'd find what appeared to be paleolithic tools. They reported the site to the state of Florida, and Dr. Jim Dunbar, then an archeologist for the state, conducted a "salvage" excavation to recover artifacts eroding from the river bank.

Over fifteen years later, a more intensive excavation was conducted by PhD. candidate Morgan Smith. Morgan is a Tallahassee native who had unknowingly kayaked by the spot a few times before starting graduate work at Texas A&M. In collaboration with Dr. Michael Waters, his faculty advisor, Morgan searched for artifacts believed to belong to the Suwannee Culture group. The Suwannee people are believed to have resided in the southeastern United States around 1 2,000 years ago.
