The Emperor Qin Shi Huang was only 4 feet 11 inches tall, so he made a law that said you had to be as tall as him to be seen as an adult. This meant that shorter men could say they were children. Back then, they didn't have good records of when people were born, so they used height instead. But if you were tall enough, you had to be really careful with your feelings because men were not allowed to cry. If they were caught crying, their beards and eyebrows were shaved off as punishment.

For women, the Qin dynasty had a strange tradition before marriage. Every woman had to cry for an hour every day for 30 days, and her mother cried with her for three weeks, her grandmother for two weeks, and her aunts and sisters for one week each. This was to show love for their family.
