Black women are still measured - consciously and unconsciously against Western standards of femininity and beauty. Standards that prize long, wavy hair, delicacy of appearance, and visual softness. Standards that were never designed with Black women in mind. So hair becomes labour. Straighten it to be “professional”. Style it to be “acceptable”. Cover it to avoid scrutiny. Explain it when questioned. And when hair is thin, damaged, or absent altogether, the message can land cruelly: that femininity itself has somehow diminished.

This is not vanity. This is conditioning. And for many Black women of faith, that conditioning goes even deeper — because it has been wrapped in scripture. We have heard verses used to suggest that a woman’s hair is her “glory”. That a woman should be quiet, submissive, unseen. That holiness looks like silence, compliance, and control of the body. But the Bible, rightly read, does not define femininity by hair, beauty, or silence. Scripture tells us that people look at outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. Proverbs reminds us that charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting — not sinful, but insufficient as a measure of worth.
