Stress MPI Scan (Myocardial perfusion imaging) is a nuclear cardiology procedure that is widely used to assess patients with or suspected coronary artery disease. This scan measures the blood flow and pumping of the heart during activities and while you are at rest.

How is it Done?

The test is done in two phases: stress and rest.

Stress Phase:

You will walk on a treadmill and the intensity of the walking will be gradually increased by increasing the speed of the treadmill.
The technician will monitor your heart rate and blood pressure. Once you have reached your maximal exercise point (that will be determined by the healthcare provider based on your heart rate and age), a technician will inject a radioactive tracer into your IV line
You need to continue to walk for several minutes after the tracer has been injected.
Then you will then be placed into the heart scanner to take the images.

Rest Phase:

For the rest phase test, you will lie on the table in the heart scanner and medicine will be injected into your IV.
The technician will monitor your heart rate and blood pressure.
The tracer will be injected into your IV line.

Post Scan Instructions:

You may take your medicine after the scan
Keep distance from pregnant ladies and children at least for 24 hours
Drink plenty of fluids

Stress MPI scan result

A normal result indicates that the flow of blood through the coronary arteries is probably normal.

An abnormal result indicates the problem. It can be due to:

Scarring of the muscle of the heart due to a previous heart attack.
The reduced flow of blood to a part of the heart because of a narrowing or blockage of one or more of the arteries that supply the heart muscle.
