Playing a "Lag" Technique on the Defensive Lineman is a more aggressive form of playing a "2-Gap" Technique. The focus of the Defensive Lineman is to attack the Offensive Lineman in front of them. While this can create a significant push and disruption in the Line of Scrimmage, it leads them to be more susceptible to "Reach" blocks. However, this is the goal of the technique as it closes the possible cutback lanes for the ball carrier and allows for more aggressive pursuit by Line Backers.

Here is a breakdown of each clip:

0:00 0 Tech Nose is reached by the Center.. After being reached he fights pressure through the back-side A-Gap and turns the corner pushing the Center into the play. The back-side Inside LB stays clean and is able to fit play-side A-Gap.

0:25 0 Tech Nose gets leverage under the Center's pads, resets the line of scrimmage and almost single handedly disrupts a wide QB Keep. If our 9 Tech Outside LB would run the circle around the kick out block we would have had a big loss.

0:33 0 Tech Nose has a great vertical push before feeling the double team by the Center & Guard. The vertical leverage allows for the split of the double team. I would have liked him to keep moving forward or lateral the entire time instead of stepping backwards to disengage from the block.

0:48 0 Tech Nose is simply better than this Center. Regardless, the 0 Tech Nose is made all the more effective by simply attacking straight ahead not worried about the possibility of being reached leading to a TFL (Tackle for Loss).

1:00 0 Tech Nose ends up taking on the double team by the Center & Guard. If this had been a running play both Inside LBs would have stayed extremely clean (and if our Field OLB would pick-up the new 2 receiver in the flats we would’ve been ok against this pass).

1:27 1 Tech Nose ends up basically playing a “Lag” Technique by pre-snap alignment. Great “Strike and Press” of the down blocking Guard allowing him to cross face after the ball carrier commits to B-Gap.

1:38 0 Tech Nose is definitely better than the Center, but this is amplified thanks to a great step & strike under the Center’s pads knocking both the Guard and Fullback off their paths to completely stop the Guard Short Trap. This leaves the back-side Inside LB clean to put his foot in the ground and re-direct after seeing the pulling Guard.

1:45 2 Tech Tackle (who should be aligned as a 3 Tech) completely wins the line of scrimmage thanks to a GREAT strike under the Guard’s pads ends up reached late after committing to the A-Gap. While this play is not ideal as the mis-alignment messed up the fit of the play-side Inside LB, it does show how a “Lag” Technique forces ball carrier to bounce wider and in the end is a nice stop on 2nd & Long.

1:52 0 Tech Nose doesn’t necessarily use a true “Lag” technique as a physically gifted although inexperienced sophomore. In my opinion the play still shows the concept as the Nose makes a great play because the only focus is gaining leverage under the Center’s pads. However, his efforts in a great 1-on-1 battle allow multiple teammates to cleanly pursue the HB Counter Trap & get a TFL despite the back-side Inside LB missing the pulling Guard.

2:05 0 Tech Nose is an absolute mis-match as previously mentioned. However, this clip clearly shows how his aggressiveness can easily lead to the Nose ending up in back-side A-Gap which again leads to both Inside LBs being completely clean to fit downhill on the ball carrier.

2:26 0 Tech Nose completely splits the double team because of the emphasis on striking the Center although this time it leads him to fit the play-side A-Gap meeting the Fullback almost immediately for a TFL on the Guard Short Trap.

2:34 0 Tech Nose causes a fumble largely because of another over powering strike. When watching the end zone view of the same play it is quite clear that if the Center was more evenly matched, the Nose probably would end up reached and in the back-side A-Gap, but the back-side Inside LB would then be able to scrape cleanly to fit the play-side A-Gap.

2:46 0 Tech Nose defeats a cut block because he quickly throws his hands, delivers a strike & is the lead part of a great push by the entire defensive front. Our top side 5 Tech was close to taking the ball after being completely unblocked because the Right Guard was focused on picking up our quick fitting Inside LB.

2:58 0 Tech Nose is cut pretty bad, ends up pushed backwards and into the back-side A-Gap. However, the back-side Inside LB is left clean. At least the Nose makes up for it by pursuing and making the downfield tackle.
