Before you drop a crab pot in any new spot, there’s one thing I always recommend — call DPI (Department of Primary Industries) and check the local rules.

Crab sizes, bag limits, what you can and can’t keep (like Jenny crabs) — the laws can change depending on your state, and even between creeks or river systems.

In this week’s tip, I share why I always make the call, and why it pays to also ask the locals about rocks, sandbars, and what’s biting where. A bit of homework could save you a fine — or save your gear from getting stuck!
