Is Plovdiv Bulgaria Europe's most underrated city?

Plovdiv (popoulation 370,000) is often said to be Bulgaria's most beautiful city, even if people from Sofia, the capital, might beg to differ.

The city's laid-back, relaxed vibe has long made it a favorite for visitors to Bulgaria, not to mention a long list of historic and cultural sites, including an Ottoman Fortress (undergoing extensive renovation and set to re-open in 2025), a spectacular Greco-Roman Theater dating to near the time of Christ, an ancient stadium in the heart of downtown, a gorgeous central park of fountains and statuary laid out in the 1890s, and much more.

Yet, there isn't the kind of over-tourism one expects elsewhere in Europe. Which is yet another reason why expats who flock here love it.
