Ketchikan, Alaska | 4K Walking Tour: Port to Creek Street, Salmon Run, & Alaska's 1st Brothel

It's Alaska's 1st city: Ketchikan. Located at the southernmost entrance to Alaska's Inside Passage, it's likely to be your first stop should you find yourself on an Alaskan cruise. Known for its mountainous wilderness and salmon spawning streams, Ketchikan is a quaint little city full of things to explore via a tour or on your own. In fact, you can traverse the touristy area within an hour on foot. That includes visiting nearby nature trails, the salmon ladder, spawning streams, and a lumberjack show. Best part is your cruise ship is pulled right up to the town, and kind of hard to miss, so you'll never get lost.

In this walk, we'll be taking a trek around town starting from port and working our way to the famed Creek Street, which is home to the salmon run and salmon ladder, as well as Alaska's first brothel (and now museum). We'll hit the south end, followed by the north and then proceed up the steep Married Man's Trail that leads us to the salmon spawning streams. Doubling-back, we'll explore the rest of town, and point out key markets, The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, and various visitors centers and museums.

For those planning to visit Alaska, know that the season for cruises ends in September. This time is fantastic for whale watching, but the salmon will be more active July/August. As for weather, September is a tricky month, with early September being light jacket temperatures, and late September possibly bringing snow. We went in the middle of the month and save for when you're on the water, you can get away with a light jacket (high 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit during the day). However, it rains a lot in Alaska, so plan accordingly.

We visited via Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas. To see that ship, check out our link below.
