This haunting masterpiece captures the precise moment hope turns into horror. Based on Gottfried August Bürger’s 1773 ballad, it tells the story of Lenore, a woman who cursed God for taking her fiancé in war. Her blasphemous prayer for his return was answered, but with a cruel twist.

Look closely at the horse's eyes—wild and manic, signaling that this is no ordinary journey. Notice the landscape dissolving into scattered tombstones beneath the hooves. Lenore clings to the heavy steel armor, blinded by her own grief, unaware that the body inside has long since decayed. She believes she is riding toward a marriage bed, but the destination is the grave.

Vernet paints a terrifying lesson on the nature of obsession: Lenore refused to let the dead rest, and in doing so, she became one of them. The "knight" is not a savior, but a corpse animated by her refusal to accept reality.
