Payana Museum: A Journey Through Automotive History

The Payana Museum, aptly named after the Kannada word for 'journey' (payana), stands as a magnificent tribute to automotive heritage, innovation, and design. Located on the bustling Bangalore-Mysore Expressway near Srirangapatna in Karnataka, India, the museum itself is an architectural marvel, with its striking façade conceptualized to resemble the silhouette of a car tyre.

Inaugurated in 2024, the museum is the visionary project of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala and a passionate patron of classic motoring. Payana serves as an extension of his long-standing personal collection, which was previously showcased at the 'Manjusha' museum in Dharmasthala. More than just a static display, the museum is intended to be a "living archive" and an educational hub dedicated to preserving the legacy of transportation, spanning from the earliest carts to modern automobiles.

The Eclectic Collection

Spread across 23 acres, the museum houses a meticulously curated collection of approximately 69 vehicles, representing significant milestones in automotive history from the early 20th century to the mid-20th century. The exhibits offer a comprehensive journey through the evolution of the wheel and motoring.

Highlights of the collection include:

Royal Connection: The majestic 1949 Daimler DE 36, which once belonged to the Maharaja of Mysore, is a prominent attraction, showcasing the pinnacle of luxury and engineering of its time.

Vintage Classics: Visitors can admire rare models such as a 1925 Fiat 501, the 1925 Austin Seven, the 1938 Buick 8, and a 1947 French Citroen Traction.

Vehicles of Note: The collection features cars with fascinating historical connections, including a model once owned by Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman and jeeps used during World War II.

Indian Motoring History: Iconic vehicles that shaped India's automotive landscape are on display, such as the 1956 Hindustan Landmaster and the 1961 Hindustan Ambassador.

Beyond Cars: The exhibit goes beyond four-wheelers, showcasing two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters), vintage commercial vehicles like Willy trucks, a double-decker bus from Mumbai, and the famous 'Kaali-Peeli' taxis. The journey begins with the evolution of the wheel and includes a variety of ancient carts and carriages, truly embodying the museum's theme of "from carts to cars."
