The Soap: Plein Air by Oaken Labs. Version 3 of his tallow based soap has a below medium 4/10 scent strength. The soap has abstract notes, “late summer”, and “warm light”, along with fennel and haystacks. It very successfully recreates the smell and feel of a warm summer breeze blowing through a field. Though Plein Air is an artistic scent, it is in no way challenging and retains a mass appealing quality. Plein Air refers to the impressionist style of painting an outdoor scene. The soap base has improved slickness, and post shave. The texture is dense and creamy, resembling sour cream. This soap belongs in the ranks of top shelf soaps.

The Brush: Heritage Collection Merit Gelled Boar. This brushmaker is specializing in resurrecting hard to find vintage brush designs and bringing them to the people. Neil’s passion for vintage brushes comes through in his Heritage Collection. He also treats the natural hair knots with a gelling process, ensuring a soft, plush feel. The gelled boar knot used here feels softer than any other boar, with zero scritch, and 100% ready to use out of the box. As an added bonus, the knots have been shampooed and conditioned prior to sending out, removing the initial funk typical with animal hair brushes. Keep an eye out for your favorite vintage designs in badger, synthetic and boar options.

The Razor: Tanifuji Spalding 6/8 full hollow spike point 1950’s Japanese made razor.

The Aftershave: Oaken Labs Conservatory. This alcohol free splash is a winner for me. It hits all the notes that I am looking for in a splash. Not heavy or oily, it refreshes and leaves the skin feeling moisturized and smooth throughout the day. The scent which is a clean airy neroli based scent is mild, lasting about an hour.
