The Fringe began in 1947, when 8 theatre groups weren’t invited to the official festival and decided to perform on the edges (the “fringe”).

Anyone can perform—there’s no selection panel! From students to world-class artists, if you find a venue, the stage is yours.

Performances have taken place in the most unexpected spots—from taxis 🚖 and elevators 🛗 to swimming pools 🏊 and even public toilets 🚽!

Many famous stars like Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), Emma Thompson, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge got their big break here.

The Fringe holds the Guinness World Record as the largest arts festival on Earth. 🌍
