Описание к видео Wagner - Tannhäuser, Overture (Pokémon MD2 Soundfont)

As requested by sea otter here's a rendition of the Overture to Tannhäuser with the Pokémon MD2 soundfont.

This extensive overture is one of the longest in the operatic repertoire, but there's not a single moment wasted here. Various important motifs in the opera are introduced here.
The overture begins with the first of these, being the solemn Pilgrim's Hymn, which dominates the first third of the piece.
As a gross oversimplification, Tannhäuser is an opera about the struggle the titular character goes through between sacred, pure love (for his wife), and lustful, profane love (for Venus). Or, even more simply, between good and evil. In this context, the Pilgrim's Hymn would serve to represent the forces of good.

This theme is at first very restrained and quiet, but soon enough builds to a majestic statement from the trombones, accompanied by Timpani rolls and steady woodwind and string accompaniment at 2:25.
Little by little the louder tone subsides, and almost completely out of nowhere, an altogether different theme appears (5:19). This is the Venusberg Music, one of the more famous themes from the opera.
This theme is remarkable in the way that it manages to sound somewhat charming and maybe a little silly, but with frequent hints of mischief and imminent danger. This is rather appropriate since this theme could arguably be said to represent the tricky, tempting forces of evil.

The intoxicating influence of this evil is felt particularly at 6:27, leading to the inspired arrival of Tannhäuser's exultant song of manic, yet feverishly passionate love for Venus (6:56). This is by far my favorite melody from this overture, 7:21 in particular being quite catchy and beautifully orchestrated.
As gorgeous as this song of love may be, the perilous repercussions of its inherent insanity are felt in the dissonant outburst that it leads into (7:43). This culmination was actually foreshadowed very quietly during the Venusberg Music at 5:46.

The outburst leads to a return of the Venusberg Music (7:55), and eventually the presentation of yet another new theme (8:21). This mysterious, highly chromatic melody is the seductive voice of Venus herself, recurringly accompanied by the Venusberg Music (8:46).
Eventually, the intoxicating influence is felt once more (9:16), leading one more time to the song of love, this time with a different orchestration and key (9:51).
The Venusberg Music returns one last time with even greater urgency (10:40), culminating in the dissonant outburst from before, louder than ever (11:19).

From there, the atmosphere gradually calms down and the toxicity subsides.
Then the Pilgrim's Hymn finally comes back (11:46) as at the beginning of the overture, but this time with a beautiful string accompaniment that's derived from the "calming down" that we just experienced.
The trumpet gets the spotlight during the last grand statement of the Pilgrim's Hymn (13:28), which concludes the overture in an uplifting fashion and suggests the ultimate triumph of good over evil at the end of the opera.
