The Urban History Association’s Early Career Committee hosted some first-time authors in this meta-discussion about their research and the COVID-19 pandemic. The group of emerging scholars on this panel — Destin Jenkins, Rebecca Marchiel, and Gabriel Winant — recently published social histories of FIRE interests, and in doing so, illuminated their influence on post-industrial urban development. In their texts, legal concepts like municipal bonds, mortgage debt, or labor arbitration allowed financial investors to intervene in urban development and create the metropolitan landscape for our contemporary crisis.
