"Of course universities are in part internet service providers, but the law was designed to protect them. There are these obligations they do have, they are somewhat vague and they are left undefined, and I would assume that most internet service providers are trying the best they can to comply with the law. But at least the obligation to terminate repeat infringers is not that hard to comply with."

"These are similar to lawsuits that we've already been filing, and we routinely settle those cases at a fraction of the damages that could be collected, and they've been in the 35-hundred to four-thousand dollar range. And we would certainly settle with students, or the faculty or staff, or whoever is engaged in the activity. The important thing is that the message be received that you're not anonymous, even when what you think is a private network. When you're on the internet, whether its internet2 or some other network, illegal activity can still be found."

STORYLINE:
Music and movie industry groups in the United States are suing hundreds of college students accused of illegally distributing copyrighted songs and films across college campuses.
The entertainment groups are targeting users of a new type of online file-sharing application based on an advanced university computer network, known as Internet2.
The Internet2 network, made up of some 200 colleges and universities and other affiliated organisations, is used to quickly swap academic data.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) said it filed federal lawsuits on Wednesday against 405 students at 18 colleges in the United States.
RIAA, the trade group for the largest recording industry labels, said it found evidence of more illegal activity at 140 more schools in 41 states and sent warning letters to university presidents.
