A large number of the questions we get surround not kilts, but accessories to go with the kilt. We've seen trends come and go, but it seems the 'Grandfather shirt' (aka grandad shirt, or Irish work shirt) is here to stay.

The Grandfather shirt (yes we sell them so we will admit bias here) offers a rugged and comfortable look that is quite in the arena of vintage men's fashion. The design is based on banded collar shirts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. IN a more formal or business setting (any occasion where you would wear a time) men would wear a separate shirt collar with this shirt. However, it was frequently worn without as collar for comfort, especially during rigorous labor. This is why the Grandad shirt is often called an Irish working shirt or workman's shirt.

The Grandfather shirt looks great with a tartan kilt. IN this video, we were asked about combining the shirt with a tweed vest, and if so, how.

The basic answer is yes. The two garments have been worn together for well over 150 years. Rocky and Erik disagree slightly on how it looks best, but the Grandfather shirt is certainly now a go-to if you want a timeless casual top for Highland dress, and tweeds are the icing on the cake!
