(22 Aug 2021) Tony Blair, the British prime minister who deployed troops to Afghanistan 20 years ago after the 9/11 attacks, says the U.S. decision to leave has led to people hostile to Western interests "really cheering."
In a lengthy essay posted on his website late Saturday, Blair said the decision to withdraw troops was “tragic, dangerous, unnecessary.”
Blair accused U.S. President Joe Biden of making the decision on the back of “an imbecilic political slogan about ending ‘the forever wars’.”
Speaking on Sunday in response to his scathing attack on the US withdrawal, he warned "Islamist threat is still there."
He said the exit was not in the West or Afghanistan’s interests, with the Taliban reasserting itself across most of the country.
In his essay, Blair accused U.S. President Joe Biden of making the decision on the back of “an imbecilic political slogan about ending ‘the forever wars’.”
He defended his statement, saying: "policy can't be decided by slogan. It's got to be decided on the basis of a strategy. And that's a different thing. And that's really the purpose of what I was saying."
