I’ve been training my German Shepherd for the past two years now. I have found a number of parallels between dog training and how we should rightly view our relationship with God.

One of the biggest parallels that I’ve seen is when it comes down to correction. Words such as; correction, discipline, boundaries, can make us feel small. These words can make us defensive in an instant. But why?

I think sometimes we hear these words and our minds immediately go to another word, abuse. Needless to say there is a huge difference between correction and abuse. That difference is called love. When it comes to dog training you will inevitably have to correct your dog. There is no way around it. But your motivation behind the correction is what determines whether it is abuse or not.

God loves you.

This means when He corrects it is never abuse but a display of His love. If He didn’t love you, He wouldn’t correct you. Hebrews 12:6 says, “For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.”

Correction is necessary for direction. Training a dog is a way to give them direction that leads to a move fulfilled life. It’s not abuse. It’s love.

Proverbs 3: 11-12 says, “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.”
