This winter storm prep checklist is the result of learning the hard way what happens when you're not prepared. A few winters ago, what we thought would be a short power outage turned into almost a week without electricity—no heat, no water from the well, no plumbing, no way to cook, and no refrigeration.

Since then, we've developed a checklist that we run through before every winter storm or possible power outage, and in this video, I'm sharing exactly what we do to prepare for extended power outages. I cover how to prep your generator and transfer switch, stockpile no-cook foods, store enough water for your family (we keep a minimum of 30 gallons), set up a designated warm room, and make sure your emergency radios and backup communications are in working order. I'll also share the critical items most people completely forget about.
