'Danser' is the catchy opening track on Marc Ducret's album 'Gris', produced in 1990 for the French record label Label Bleu. 'Gris' was the third and final record Ducret released on this label, a stint that also produced his debut record 'La théorie du pilier' (1987) and 'Le Kodo' (1989). With each record, Ducret added more musical elements to his overall group. While the debut record was a relatively straightforward electric guitar trio record and 'Le Kodo' added a saxophone to the mix, on 'Gris' Ducret brought in trumpet, trombone, electric bass, and electric piano players as well, with a total of eight different players appearing in a variety of different lineups from track to track. This particular track features the following lineup:

Michel Benita - bass
Joel Allouche - drums, percussion

Though they aren't featured on this track, the record also has performances by trumpeter Enrico Rava, saxophonist Francois Jeanneau, pianist Andy Emler, and bassist Renaud Garcia Fons. In the year following this record, Ducret recorded one more record featuring brass players alongside his uniquely cutting and energetic guitar style (1991's 'News from the Front' for JMT/Winter & Winter). That time also marked the beginning of his important and prolific series of collaborations with the Brooklyn saxophonist Tim Berne (Caos Totale, Diminutive Mysteries, etc..) and other American avant-jazz players such as drummer Bobby Previte and trumpeter Herb Robertson.

'Gris' is a pretty obscure record and is not very easy to come by on CD. By chance, I managed to find it used a few years ago. Fortunately, the MP3 album was made available on Amazon earlier this summer. It comes highly recommended for fans of electric jazz/fusion and forward-thinking guitar-playing.
