In this video, I interview Dr. Lisa Radosta, a board-certified veterinary behaviorist about noise phobia (also called noise aversion) in dogs.

She explains that you have to take action to get your dog help if their emotional state changes due to loud noise like fireworks, thunder, construction, traffic, etc. Early intervention can reduce or eliminate the fear. However, dogs don't just "grow out of it".

While Dr. Radosta doesn't see most dogs with noise phobias in her practice until they are 4-6 years old, most dogs develop this fear of loud noises earlier on.

It's unlikely you will eliminate the behavior if your dog has been fearful for some time. But there are various supplements and medications that can give your dog relief.
