Описание к видео Finding Your Dog’s Working Level on the E-Collar

Have you ever wondered what all the talk about a “Working Level” on the remote collar really is? Well I hope to clarify how we find it on our dogs, as well as explain how it works...

The Working Level is the lowest number on the remote that a dog feels any indication of stimulation. This typically ranges anywhere from 4-6 on most dogs. If you are not seeing any reaction when above 10, check your fit. If the contact points are not touching the dog’s skin, the remote is completely ineffective. The collar needs to be snug, but not so snug that the dog has trouble breathing or swallowing. When the ecollar is too loose, the dog does not feel the stimulation consistently. Inconsistency is the major factor leading to stress.

Make sure you are in a neutral setting with ZERO distraction. Put your dog in a seated position. Turn your dial all the way down to 1. Tap the button 5x. Watch carefully for any sign that your dog feels the stim. Sometimes the reaction from this new sensation is so subtle from your dog that it’s difficult to tell which level is the lowest number needed for him to actually feel it. You should be looking for a dog that glances down at the floor, twitches his ear, or even blinks. If no indication is noticed, dial up to 2. Repeat this process while incrementally dialing up one number at a time until your dog gives you a sign. Take your time. Retest at least 3 times to avoid overstimulation at a level that may be a bit too high. Once a dog becomes more aware of this new sensation, he will become more sensitive to it the next time it is delivered, so a lower number than was initially noticed will then be your working level.

The e-collar is used in the same exact fashion as the prong collar through pressure avoidance, a form of Negative Reinforcement: Removing (negative) the stimulation to increase (reinforce) the likelihood of said behavior continuing. So for instance, if I were to give the command “Down” I would use a continuous stim at the working level. Once the dog complies to the command, the pressure is then removed.

Before ever considering using the remote collar, your dog should already have an understanding of pressure avoidance using the prong collar for his obedience foundation. This ensures that the pressure from the remote will transfer easier to the behavior it is being applied to. This will essentially teach the dog that his behavior and his own choices cause the sensation to go away. When e-collar conditioning is done well, the dog feels as though their behavior controls the collar, they understand what decisions cause it to turn on and what decisions cause it to turn off.

This video demonstrates Cooper’s reaction to a level 4 out 100. I knew Cooper was hyper-sensitive to just about any new experience whether a sneeze or a fly landing on his head, so finding his working level, was more than likely going to be dramatic. His reaction to the 4 is an indication of it being a bit too high for a working level so we will be dialing it down to a 3 and go from there.

PAWSitively Calm, Balanced K-9 Training, is a Central Florida Board and Train focused on helping families live CALM, happy lives with their dogs. I work with clients who's dogs exhibit the following bratty behaviors: pulling on leash, jumping, counter surfing, leash reactivity, anxiety, whining, arousal issues, and more!

So why so much focus on creating CALM? Aren’t our dogs supposed to have fun and round around like maniacs? Do you have a dog that reacts on walks, reacts in the house to the dog on TV, is fearful or stressed out, creating calm can have a major impact on arousal issues. Does your dog pull on the leash, rush the door, whine all the time, guard his food bowl, jump up onto the counter to grab what’s cookin, act crazy in your car, and is constantly misbehaving? Well you’re not alone. Most dog owners suffer from bratty pets due to the lack of structure and consequences needed to stop unwanted behavior. Slowing these guys down will help them make better decisions that would otherwise seem impossible. Whatever your problem may be, I am here to help you create the framework needed to ensure your dog is the calm, balanced pooch you have always imagined.
