In 1518 the residents of strasburg in france were struck by a sudden urge to dance. I know weve all had the urge to dance after a drink or two, but the case in strasburg lasted from july all the way to september.

The hysteria began when a woman took to the streets and began to dance, with her solo danceathon lasting roughly a week. She seemed unable to stop, and kept dancing until exhaustion. After resting, she didnt stop and instead resumed her frenzied activity and Soon after, 3 dozen more citizens had joined in, and by august, the dancing epidemic had spread to roughly 400 people. The local physicians had no explanation for what had taken hold of the city, and blamed it on hot blood, and suggested the people afllicted just dance it off.

Professional dancers were bought in to join the others and a stage was constructed, with a band being hired to provide backing music. It didnt take long for the dancing marathon take effect on people, as many dancers would collapse from exhaustion, with some dying from strokes and heart attacks. The dancing plague would last until early september of the same year when it began to drop off.
