Director Statement
"One Percent" was born out of anger, helplessness, and the quiet fear that we’ve all begun to accept poison as the price of progress. Living in Delhi, where the air itself feels weaponized, I’ve watched children grow up coughing; normalizing masks before the pandemic even began. I wanted to make a film that doesn’t lecture, but breathes urgency into the viewer’s lungs.

The film follows Laxman, a young boy in the slums, who embarks on a desperate journey to find clean air; something that should be a basic right, not a privilege. The title One Percent refers not only to the final life left in an air purifier filter, but to the thin margin of survival many underprivileged families in Delhi exist within.

I chose to shoot the film with a hybrid aesthetic combining vérité-style street realism with controlled, almost poetic lighting in interiors to reflect the collision between Laxman's harsh environment and his fragile hope. It’s not a dystopia. It’s not the future. It’s now.

This is not just a story about air. It’s a story about access. About class. About a boy’s right to breathe.

With One Percent, my goal is to reach audiences around the world and remind them: while we debate policy, children are already gasping.
