Starting from grass and weeds of any kind, this method deprives them of light until they die, mostly!
You can use as little as 5 cm/2 inches of compost on the cardboard. Or if you use 10cm / 4in or more, you can plant into the compost without waiting for weeds to die under the cardboard.

Within about 10 weeks, the cardboard starts to disintegrate and roots of plants you put in can go down into the soil below. Likewise a few convolvulus and marestail may appear at the surface, and you need to pull them regularly, to weaken roots below.
