Designed by Community (DxC) is a fellowship and project funding opportunity created by the NYC Service Design Studio (‘the Studio’). DxC is a community-led approach to designing community-based services. The Studio partners with an organization to hire 6 community Fellows (residents who have roots in the community) to design and develop hyper-localized solutions for their neighborhood using the Service Design methodology.

In 2023, the Studio partnered with Phipps Neighborhoods, with the goal to improve digital access in the Bronx. This documentary highlights the Fellows' journey and design research process.

Recognizing that the City typically operates under a top-down structure, this fellowship program aims to build evidence for community-led projects that allow community members to have multiple forms of power that are typically held by City and Organizational administrators.

____________

Sitting within the Mayor’s Office for Economic Opportunity (NYCO), the Service Design Studio helps spread valuable community-centered design methodologies that are often underused in government. Our approach begins by trying to understand the needs of people who use and administer public services, and designing the service to meet those needs. With that knowledge, our team works with City agency partners to shape services that are effective, user-friendly, sustainable, and scalable.
