Project Portmanteau is a research and development project that started with The Seagull Theatre in Suffolk. This extract is based on the life story of a couple who are living with dementia. It is the retelling of their memories, remembered vividly and offered to us as a story to adapt into The Dot Collective's storytelling.

The Dot Collective professional, accessible theatre company collaborated with The Seagull Theatre over a 4 week residency. During the residency, they developed their theory that “by creating a show with additional needs at the core of the creative process, you create a more engaging show for all”. The Dot Collective engaged with participants from the community including local groups Topcats, Fabba, Squawk, Memory cafe and sing along groups. They ran storytelling, movement, dance and circus workshops where participants were encouraged to express themselves. This allowed the creative team to discover their interests and life stories, structuring each workshop to suit the themes/interests that emerged, and develop performance techniques that reflect how participants best engage. They explored in more depth particular elements to aid the final piece. Devised through collaborative storytelling and showcased through multi-sensory theatre that includes music, aerial circus and poetry, the piece looks at the importance of coming together as a community, having zest for life despite the challenges it presents us with and ultimately standing proud to be who we are.
