Modernism is born by inspiration in forms of nature. In 1890-1910, the bourgeoisie was enriched and wanted pleasure. There were two styles: geometric style and ornamental style (with curved lines). Other names are Art Nouveau (France and Belgium), Modern Style (England), Jugendstil (Germany and North Countries), Sezession (Austria), Nieuwe Kunst (Netherlands), and Liberty (Italy). It is a new art that wants to be young, free and modern, to break with the dominant styles of that time, with both the academicists (historicism and eclecticism) and rupturists (realism and impressionism).

Painting is in the line of symbolist painting, but insisting in the purity of line. It gives a bidimensional character. The theme of the woman is the most usual, with an erotic and even diabolic treatment. Also organic forms, curved line plants, horror vacui.
