At least seven soldiers, including a colonel, were killed and more than 10 were injured during a shootout at a military base in Tunisia on Monday, according to medical workers at the Tunisian military hospital.

The incident occurred at the Bouchoucha barracks in the Tunisian capital, Tunis Monday morning. The soldier, identified as Mehdi Jemaii, was able to acquire a weapon from a point guard at the barracks and opened fire on his colleagues.

One of the soldiers is in critical condition, said Belhassen Oueslati, a spokesman of the Ministry of Defence at the press conference.

Jemaii, who according to Ouselati, had family problems and suffers from a mental illness, was then shot and killed.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown. However, it is not being linked to terrorism.

The attack occurred not far from the Bardo museum where two Islamist fighters opened fire on tourists, killing 21 foreigners in March.
