Did you know St. Astier Natural Hydraulic Lime mortars can be successfully re-worked and used for up to 24 hours after being originally mixed without adding water? Read the fascinating explanation below.

Since St. Astier's NHL mortars are almost entirely Belitic with negligible amounts of Alites, meaning they rely on Dicalcium Silicates (CS2) to set rather than Tricalcium aluminates and Tricalcium silcates (CS3), the time which the mortars can be re-worked is up to the 24-hour mark.

If mortars are not able to be re-worked in this time frame it indicates that they may be more alitic or have a faster set. This can be due to additives like extra pozzolans, gypsum or portland cement. Even other NHL mortars can have higher levels of Alites in them, stemming from the mineralogy of the limestone and higher burn temperatures in the kilns.

This feature reduces the amount of waste material on the job site and can enable crews to get a jump start on the work the next day. Materials fit for purpose. #knowyourmud
