The downhill from Nufenen Pass (2,478 m) to Airolo (1,142 m) is a thrilling ~22-24 km descent through Switzerland's Val Bedretto in Ticino canton, with an average gradient of 6-7% and max drops of 10%. Starting at the pass's plateau with small lakes and panoramic views of the Gries Glacier and Bernese Alps, the paved Hauptstrasse 413 winds through exposed switchbacks and rocky slopes, transitioning to gentler straights amid alpine meadows and fir forests. Pass All'Acqua (~1,800 m), a quiet hamlet with historic chapels and avalanche barriers, then Fontana (~1,500 m), a charming village with traditional stone houses and the Ticino River nearby. The final stretch eases into Airolo's valley, offering stunning vistas but requiring caution for narrow roads, wind, and cyclists. Ideal in summer (June-October), the drive takes 30-45 minutes, blending high-alpine drama with serene valley scenery.
