The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is considering replacing its fleet of diesel-powered Land Rover 4x4s with electric models in an effort to improve performance on the battlefield. Electric Land Rovers offer advantages such as quick acceleration, quiet operation, and no heat signature, making them difficult to detect by heat-seeking missiles. They also eliminate the need to change gears, reducing driver fatigue. Electric vehicles (EVs) can navigate steep terrain more easily and have better control on uneven surfaces. Additionally, EVs offer logistical benefits, such as fuel savings and reduced casualties from escorting fuel convoys. The MoD is interested in the potential of EVs to improve military vehicle design by freeing up space inside armoured personnel carriers and allowing for individual control of each wheel. While there are challenges to overcome, such as the need for charging infrastructure and the potential vulnerability of recharging points on the battlefield, the MoD sees the potential strategic advantage of reducing reliance on liquid fuel.
