Social isolation and loneliness affect 1⃣ in 4⃣ older adults, and at least 1⃣ in 6⃣ adolescents. It is linked to higher rates of anxiety, depression and suicide, and is attributable to 5% of global dementia risk. It increases 📈 the risk of various health conditions, including raising the risk of stroke by 32% and cardiovascular disease by 29%. A lack of social connection also increases mortality rates by as much as 14% - 32%.

Drawing attention to this pervasive public health issue at #WHA78, Regional Director Saima Wazed called for collective action.

“We must prioritize social connection as a public health issue, and address the root causes of this problem. Doing so will create a more connected and compassionate society,” she said.
