The state museum-preserve of Tarkhany is classified as a place of federal significence... The official name is the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Culture "State Lermontov Museum-Reserve" Tarkhany ".
Within the confines of the preserve is a manor house and is one of the most famous places associated with Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, the poet, romantic writer and painter. He is considered the greatest figure in Russian Romanticism and the most important Russian poet after Alexander Pushkin.

"Tarkhany" was the childhood home of Lemontsov who was born into the respectable noble family Lermontovs. His paternal family descended from the Scottish family of Learmonth, and can be traced to Yuri (George) Learmonth, a Scottish officer in the Polish-Lithuanian service who settled in Russia in the middle of the 17th century.
